Etruscan Images of Nature

There is ample evidence that intensive studies of nature’s epiphanies were observed in Etruria and priesthoods established for that purpose from early on with the ambition of adverting disasters or explain omens and heavenly signs. Therefore, it is not surprising to find biological pictorial elements displayed on pottery, painted on tomb walls or engraved on mirrors. Etruscan artists generally rendered natural objects very realistically and they are easy to recognise and identify. The objective of this talk is to demonstrate the various ways early images of the environment can provide information of Etruscan values and everyday life.

Ingela M.B. Wiman is docent (Associate Professor) emerita at the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Gothenburg. Her main research interests are Etruscan mirrors and artifacts as well as environmental studies. She has published a number of books and articles related to these subjects.
