The Re-routing of Roman Subsidies
– From Constantinople via Italy to Scandinavia

This paper presents comparative research on the East Roman solidi discovered in Italian and Scandinavian hoards. It is demonstrated that some Italian hoards, notably the Como hoard, only have rather few die-links to other hoards, whereas other some Scandinavian hoards, notably the Åby and BJörnhovda hoards on Öland are connected to a wide range of different finds in Italy. A number of theories are discussed and evaluated as possible explanatory models for this distribution pattern.
