”Maecenas, Chimera and Gamurrini – the hidden history of Etruscan Arezzo”
For many scholars and students, the name of Arezzo is associated with the Chimera bronze statue, red pottery (“Arretine ware”) and the wealthy patron Maecenas. To delve into the earlier history of the city is a challenge that was first undertaken by Gianfrancesco Gamurrini and later by excavations within the city and in the surrounding territory. The focus of my talk is to identify our sources for Arretine history and to highlight the new information that we have for the different aspects of the city’s importance in ancient Italy.
Ingrid M. Edlund-Berry is professor emerita at the department of Classics, The University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Edlund-Berry’s main focus is Etruscan and Italian archaeology and culture, in which fields she has published extensively.
