Barbro Santillo Frizell
“Tracing Etruscan Transhumance”

The aim of my study is to investigate historical landscape patterns in relation to seasonal migration and viability of the transhumance in the Apennine area which were using the Maremma regions for winter pasture. Here I wish to discuss the evidence of the transhumance during the Etruscan period, which is less known compared to Roman, Late Medieval and Modern periods. Since there are no written documents or other archive material from these periods, other approaches of research should be considered, employing mainly archaeological and topographic (eventually also toponomastic) methods.

Barbro Santillo Frizell is professor emerita in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at Uppsala University. Between 2001 and 2013 prof. Santillo Frizell was Director of the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome.
