Associate Professor of Latin, University of Gothenburg

Guest researcher 2022-2023 (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond for the Advancement of the Humanities and Social Sciences)

During my stay as a guest researcher at the Swedish Institute (December 2022–May 2023) I will work with the project ’Ways Through Medieval Rome’ (’Vägarna genom det medeltida Rom’). This is a continuation of a previous project based at the Swedish Institute, ’Topos and Topography – Rome as the Guidebook City’, where I studied medieval topographical texts concerning Rome, first and foremost the itineraries and the inscription collection in MS. Einsiedeln no. 326. In the present project, I will combine epigraphical, textual and topographical sources from the 6th–12th centuries in order to show how the interrelation of text and place shaped both the physical and the imaginative Rome experienced by medieval visitors.
